Demeter / Hope
Demeter, Greek goddess of grain, abundance and fertility, represents the ‘mother’ stage of the triple goddess. She was the Mother of the Great Triangle of life, complete in all her parts: Creator, Preserver, Destroyer.
Meter means ‘Mother’
De is the word for Delta, the triangle shaped letter of the Greek alphabet.
Whether forced or willing (too much to unravel here) , Demeter’s only daughter Persephone was taken to the Underworld to live with the god Hades.
In overwhelming grief, Demeter searched for the precious child – her companion and ‘mirror’ who represented her own childhood and maiden days. Fruitless in her search, Demeter declared she would never allow anything to grow on Earth whilst her daughter was missing.
Zeus grew concerned about the people starving and Hecate, the Crone eventually came to Demeter’s aid. Usually one cannot leave the Underworld if they have eaten there and Persephone had consumed 6 pomegranate seeds. A deal was made allowing Persephone to spend half a year on Earth and the other half in the Underworld.
